Coulrophobiacs Beware! Pennywise Is Joining Your Betrayal at House on the Hill Game!
We played Betrayal last night at boardgame night and used this scenario pack. So first, I tend not to refer to these boxes as “expansions” because I feel like they are really scenario packs. This uses the format of its two predecessors: “Blood on the Moon” and “Evil Reigns in The Wynter’s Pale,” which is to say it contains some miniatures, some tokens, some cards, and new scenario books. One difference between “The Evil of Pennywise” and previous scenario packs is it contains a deck of Pennywise Encounters cards that sort of replace the Omen deck before the haunt begins (once the haunt starts, the Pennywise Encounters deck isn’t used). Some of these cards have you draw an Omen card as part of their resolution and some do not. They are all very much written and themed to match the vibe of “It.” It’s a nice change of pace and I like these cards.Rather than include a new character like the other two above-mentioned scenario packs do, it comes with an overlay and plastic clip of Henry Bowers, which can be put on top of an existing character and clipped in place. It feels a little bit like an end run around creating a character for the expansion, but it worked out just fine in play so no big complaints there. I won’t describe here how it comes into play because I don’t want to give any spoilers. There are three nice-looking plastic miniatures: Henry Bowers, Pennywise as a clown, and Pennywise as a spider. These are tied to various scenarios and I won’t give details so as to avoid spoilers.Just as with the two previous scenario packs, there are two booklets. The first booklet has a page of simple guidelines on how to incorporation the scenario into your Betrayal game followed by write-ups of the five scenarios from the perspective of the explorers. The second book is the Traitor’s Tome and contains write-ups of the five scenarios from the perspective of the traitor(s).I adore these scenario packs to be quite honest. They add some nice variety to your Betrayal at House on the Hill game for a reasonable price. Given that boards are more and more starting to sell for $100 and up, it’s quite refreshing to add a splash of life to an existing board game for $25.What’s I’d like to see is more sustainable packaging. These scenario packs come in 9 1/2″ x 7″ x 1 1/2″ boxes with a large plastic insert. Honestly, they could be packaged in a MUCH smaller form factor that is more sustainable and easier to store. But that’s a small nit.As a side note for players who might now be aware of how these scenario packs (“Blood on the Moon”, “Evil Reigns in The Wynter’s Pale”, and “The Evil of Pennywise”), each one comes with a Scenario Card that replaces the five Scenario Cards that come with the main game. So when you start up a new game of Betrayal, one of the first things you do during set-up is choose which Scenario Card you’re going to play with. You can either choose one of the five from the base game or one of the cards from a scenario pack that you own. TLDR: you can play Betrayal with only the base game or with ONE (and ONLY one) of the scenario packs for any given game that you play.In short, if your gaming group enjoys Betrayal at House on the Hill and you want to breath some new life into your sessions, you can’t go wrong with this scenario pack. Maybe the company could package these things in a smaller form factor, but that’s a minor complaint.
